Enhanced ACT Score Calculator

Free ACT score calculator: turn your practice-test answers into section scores, a Composite, a STEM score and a national percentile, using ACT's official tables.

Scored questions correct

Count only the 40 scored questions. Your answer key marks the 10 unscored field-test questions.

41 of the 45 questions are scored.

27 of the 36 questions are scored.

Shown in your results. It doesn't change your Composite.

Took the older ACT? Use the with your section scores.

Your estimated score

Enter your scored correct answers to see your Composite, percentiles and your fastest path to the next point.

Disclaimer: This is an estimate, not an official score. ACT scales each test form separately, so the same number of correct answers can score differently on a real test. Only ACT can report your official scores. TutoringForAct.com isn't affiliated with ACT.

How to use this calculator

This calculator estimates your Enhanced ACT score from an official ACT practice test.

  1. Grade your practice test with ACT's official answer key. Skip the unscored field-test questions the key marks.
  2. Count your correct answers on scored questions in each section.
  3. Enter those counts above and select Calculate my score. Tick the Science box only if you took Science.
  4. Already have section scores from a score report? Use the "From section scores" tab instead. For the older four-section test, use "Old ACT".

How Enhanced ACT scoring works

Your Composite now averages English, Math and Reading. Science is optional and reported separately, along with a STEM score. Here's what the calculator does with your counts:

  1. It converts each raw score to a 1 to 36 scale score using ACT's official conversion table.
  2. It averages English, Math and Reading and rounds to the nearest whole number, with halves rounding up.
  3. If you took Science, it also averages Math and Science for your STEM score.
  4. It looks up each score in ACT's national ranks table for your percentile.

Why 40 English questions, not 50?

Each Enhanced ACT section includes field-test questions that ACT is trying out. They don't count toward your score. ACT's scoring key lists the scored counts:

Worked example

  • English: 30 of 40 correct gives a scale score of 24
  • Math: 30 of 41 correct gives 28
  • Reading: 20 of 27 correct gives 25
  • Science: 25 of 34 correct gives 27

Composite: (24 + 28 + 25) ÷ 3 = 25.67, which rounds to 26. That's the 86th national rank.

STEM: (28 + 27) ÷ 2 = 27.5, which rounds up to 28. That's the 92nd national rank.

Fastest path to a 27: the three section scores need to add up to 80 (they add up to 77 now). Two more correct Reading answers move Reading from 25 to 28, which gets there. English would need 3 more correct answers and Math 4 more.

ACT percentile chart

A national rank is the percent of recent test-takers who scored at or below a given score. After you calculate, your Composite row is highlighted and marked "You". For what counts as a good score at each level, see what is a good ACT score, or compare with the average ACT score by section.

Enhanced vs legacy ACT scoring

ACT shortened the test with its Enhanced format. According to ACT, the test now takes 75 minutes less and has 44 fewer questions, and the Composite averages English, Math and Reading. Composite scores from tests taken before the change don't change. The Enhanced ACT explainer covers timing and dates, and the retake guide explains how ACT superscores and retakes work. Have scores from more than one test? The superscore calculator combines your best sections.

Legacy ACT

  • Composite: average of English, Math, Reading and Science
  • Questions: English 75, Math 60, Reading 40, Science 40
  • Science required

Enhanced ACT

  • Composite: average of English, Math and Reading
  • Questions: English 50, Math 45, Reading 36, Science 40 (40, 41, 27 and 34 scored)
  • Science optional, reported with a STEM score

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate an ACT score?

Count the questions you got right in each section, counting only the scored questions. Convert each raw score to a 1 to 36 scale score with the conversion table for that test. Then add your English, Math and Reading scale scores, divide by 3, and round to the nearest whole number, with halves rounding up. That average is your Composite. Science, if you take it, is reported separately and feeds your STEM score.

Why does the calculator only count 40 English questions?

The Enhanced ACT English section has 50 questions, but only 40 are scored. The other 10 are field-test questions that don't count. On ACT's official practice test, 41 of the 45 Math questions, 27 of the 36 Reading questions and 34 of the 40 Science questions are scored, and the answer key marks which ones to skip. The number of unscored questions can vary between test forms, so always go by the key for the test you took.

Does Science count toward the ACT Composite anymore?

Not on the Enhanced ACT. Your Composite is now the average of English, Math and Reading. Science is optional. If you take it, you get a Science score and a STEM score, but neither changes your Composite.

What is the ACT STEM score?

Your STEM score is the average of your Math and Science scale scores, rounded to the nearest whole number. You only get one if you take the Science section.

Why isn't my ELA score shown?

ACT's ELA score averages English, Reading and Writing, but ACT first converts your Writing score to a 1 to 36 scale that it doesn't publish. Because that conversion isn't public, this calculator can't estimate ELA honestly. You'll see it on your official score report if you take Writing.

How accurate is a practice-test estimate?

This calculator uses the conversion table from ACT's official online practice test scoring key. Every ACT test form has its own table, so the conversion on your real test day may differ slightly. Treat the result as a close estimate, not an official score.

How was the old ACT Composite calculated?

On the legacy ACT, the Composite was the average of four sections: English, Math, Reading and Science, rounded to the nearest whole number. Use the Old ACT tab above if your scores come from that format. ACT says Composite scores from tests taken before the change stay the same.

Does the Writing score affect my ACT Composite?

No. Writing is optional and scored separately on a 2 to 12 scale. It doesn't change your Composite.

What percentile is my ACT score?

The calculator shows ACT's national ranks, which give the percent of test-takers who scored at or below your score. The current table is based on ACT-tested high school graduates of 2024, 2025 and 2026, and ACT uses it for tests taken from September 2026 through August 2027.

Is a 26 a good ACT score?

A 26 Composite sits at the 86th national rank in ACT's current table, so it's at or above the scores of about 86% of recent test-takers. Whether it's good for you depends on your colleges. ACT suggests comparing your score with the scores of students admitted to the schools you're applying to.

How is an ACT superscore different?

A superscore takes your best English, Math and Reading scores from different test dates and averages them, instead of using one sitting. On the Enhanced ACT that means adding your best three section scores and dividing by 3. ACT counts tests taken since September 2016, whether they were legacy or Enhanced.

Tables last checked:

The Enhanced ACT Score Calculator on TutoringForAct.com was built by Cedrick Reese. Its conversion tables were entered from ACT's official online practice test scoring key, then every value in all four tables was compared with that PDF, and a second official ACT practice test key was used as a spot check. The percentiles come from ACT's national ranks table, and the rounding rule comes from ACT's own score guide. Both tables are rechecked when ACT publishes new national norms for a testing year and whenever ACT releases a new official practice test key.
